Want to Write for Talkhoops.net?

We're always looking for talented and ambitious writers to contribute to Talkhoops.net. Here are the parameters for writing for our site:

1. We're looking for sharp knowledge about the NBA. There shouldn't be articles like the Lakers should get LeBron and Dwyane Wade to go with Kobe.

2. You need to be somewhat entertaining. Have fun with what you're writing and make it relevant to today's world.

3. Proofread what you submit. Spellcheck it and check the grammar. I want it as tight as possible.

4. This at the moment is not a paying job. In the future, it most likely could be, that's going to be quite a while. This is an opportunity to have your voice heard by thousands of readers and to express your feelings on basketball today.

5. When you submit something to me, it only goes to me. Once something is submitted to Talkhoops.net, you cannot have it posted on another website without our consent. We essentially own it.

If these sound like reasonable requests and you love to write about basketball, submit some writing to writeforus@talkhoops.net or zharper@talkhoops.net. Thanks for your continued support.

Games 2 and 3 Recap
Genius or a moron? Definitely a moron. Well, maybe. I wouldn't quite say Steve Kerr is a moron for acquiring Shaq because I'm almost certain the series would be the same with Shawn Marion on the roster.  However, he has scapegoat written all over his face with the way things are looking for the Suns.  Words of advice: Learn how to play Suns' basketball with the Big Cactus on the floor and FAST.

Game 2:
What have I said from the beginning? Mike D'Antoni cannot close and in true Suns' fashion, they blew a double digit first half lead.  Shaq stayed out of foul trouble and registered more minutes, points, and rebounds than the first game. But it was poor shooting and turnovers that hurt the Suns in the third quarter.  They went into halftime up seven and with a quarter to go they found themselves down by nine.  After going down by as many as 17 in the fourth, the Sun's fought back with a 10-0 run with a little under three minutes left in the game.  Amare hit a big three pointer with 14 seconds left but unfortunately it was not enough.  Phoenix ended up losing the game 102 to 96.

Game 3:
Tony Parker said pick your poison. The Suns said beat us with your jump shot.  Tony Parker said okay, and he did just that.  Tony Parker scored a career high 41 points and also had 12 assist. I'm sorry but if I wore D'Antoni's shoes Friday night, there's no way Tony Parker would have hit me for 41 points. The Suns killed the Spurs in the paint by scoring 20 more points. However, they were so busy guarding the pick and roll, they forgot all about the guy rubbing off the screen dribbling the ball. The Suns had less turnovers, more fast break points and more unanswered points, but still managed to lose by 16. What is going on? Amare had 28 points and 11 boards, Shaq had 19 points and even Barbosa did his share with 20 points. But it was Steve Nash who was held to only seven points and nine assist because of an ever so bothersome Bruce Bowen.  One thing has become apparent after a loss like this. Each player on the Suns must play well in order for them to win a game.  These guys cannot finish a game if one guy is having an off night. Steve Kerr better start hunting for a new coach soon because getting swept in the first round in flat out unacceptable.

Headed into game four:
Life is good for the Spurs. They can get blown out (In no way shape or form am I predicting this will or might happen) and have no sweat off their backs.  I hate the fact the Suns are going to get swept in the first round, much more than you know.  But D'Antoni brought this mess upon himself. The day Mike knows how to close is the day the Suns will win a championship, either that or when they fire his ass.

Game 1 Recap
Mike D'Antoni cannot close.  I've said it once and I'll say it again, and again, and again until he learns how to close a game.  If any of you ended up watching the Spurs-Suns match up, I'm sure you would agree with me the game should have never gone into overtime, twice.

As I predicted Tim Duncan dropped 40 points and I don't remember any but three of them, Tony Parker took Nash to the rack all night long, Ginobli came off the bench and lit everyone up for 24 points and Shaq received limited minutes due to foul trouble.  You would think a double overtime game win by two would be exciting.  But, let's not forget the Spurs were playing.

Due to the fact their inside presence was sidelined, the Suns were murdered in the paint by 26 points.   Amare ended up with 33 points but his presence was obviously missed during the second overtime period. Ginobli, Parker, and Duncan combined for 90 of the Spurs 117 points.

With fifteen seconds left in regulation, Shaq was on the bench and I'm still very confused as to why. Leandro Barbosa ended up missing a lay-up to win the game.  The lead was traded throughout the first overtime and Duncan knocked down a huge three with three seconds left to send it into a second overtime. The second overtime was much like the first with each team trading baskets and no one really pulling away.  The Spurs went up by three with a Brent Barry free-throw.  Nash, in true Nash fashion, came down and hit a big three pointer to tie the game at 115 nearly falling over in the process. Ginobli came down and beat Bell bad off the dribble all the way to the basket for a lay up with little to no time left on the clock.

There were a few things I missed in the preview that happened in the first game.  I neglected to mention Kurt Thomas' role in the first game.  He came in and received an Oscar for all the flopping he did on defense. Nevertheless, he created a lot of defensive spurts for the Spurs.

Also, I knew Nash had clutch but I did not expect him to come through like he did.  He hit many key shots down the stretch to keep them in the game and created some key shots for others. There was no possible way for me to predict Finley would hit the big shot to send it into the first overtime and I'd love to hear from any of you who knew Duncan would hit that shot to send it into the second.

In order to be successful in game two D'Antoni needs to take a decision making skills class during the break. I'm so confused why he had Shaq on the bench at the end of regulation.  It was fifteen seconds, not three, not four, not five. Fifteen. There is plenty of time to set something up for Shaq close to the basket. It would have been a higher percentage shot than Barbosa's. Shaq and Amare need to stay out of foul trouble.  Keeping up in points in the paint is going to be key for the series. Other than the high amount of turnovers, the Spurs played great basketball. All of their key players performed well and the role players played their position.  However, if I were on the team I would be a little nervous, because playing a great game and only winning by two in overtime is not the turn out I would have expected.

Series Preview
The ever so popular “genius or moron” debate will soon come to a close.  The Suns have seven games to prove Steve Kerr made the most influential move of the year.  It was the fear of this exact match up that prompted Kerr to acquire Shaq in the first place.  Now they are set to meet in the first round of the playoffs and attempting to knock off the defending champs.  This task is not going to be easy by any means.  However, acquiring a seven-foot veteran, who knows just as much about winning a playoff series as his new team combined, just may be the key his team needs to beat the Spurs.  I have a soft spot in my heart for the “Big Fella,” so if I was to bet with emotion I’d place my money on the Suns.  Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. After placing my money on USC in the first round of the tournament, on what was an obvious emotion based pick, I’ve learned my lesson.  My prediction: “Flip a coin because this one is tough” in seven games.

In order for the Suns to win the series they must play great basketball on both ends of the court for seven full games.  This is going to be difficult but not impossible.  Shaq needs to play smart, control the boards, and stay out of foul trouble.  The Suns need him to play quality minutes in order for them to advance.  Also, Phoenix cannot forget the reason they win games.  They push the ball and run the floor better than any other team in the league.  (By the way, I’m still maintaining it doesn’t take five people to run a break. Never has, never will). In order for Shaq to play his role the rest of the team cannot forget theirs.

On the other hand, the Spurs can have a few off nights and still advance.  The one thing about the Spurs that never waivers is they know their roles and play them well.   I don’t expect to see too many big shots out of Bowen, but I do expect him to lock Grant Hill up.  I don’t expect Parker to rip Nash at the top of the key more than twice, but I do expect him take Nash to the basket all night long. Tim Duncan will still be the most boring and fundamental forward in the league, that will never change, and Manu will prove why the NBA needs to retire the sixth man award.  They have won those championships for a reason and they will show it against the Suns.  I just hope Pop and the boys don’t think Assistant General Shaqtus and the troops are going to take it lying down.

Point Guard - Tony Parker vs. Steve Nash
Parker is going to light Nash up.  He is going to take him off the dribble more times than any of us can count and be good for 20 points a night give or take a bucket or two. The only thing he has to worry about is that seven-foot wall he’s going to run into in the paint. I hope he has been practicing on those 15-footers. Nash is known for his ability to get others involved.  If he can stick to what he’s good at, the Suns should be in good shape.  However, if he tries to be a hero and jack up unnecessary shots and turn the ball over the Spurs will capitalize on it.
Advantage - Tony Parker
Shooting Guard - Michael Finley vs. Raja Bell
Finely is good for his average.  I wouldn’t expect much more or much less, especially if Bell is guarding him. I would be surprised if he performs above and beyond what’s asked of him. Raja Bell is going to be better for the Suns on defense than offense.  He will knock down shots here and there when needed but I don’t see him playing any major offensive role in the series.  Especially since he is performing close to two points and one assist lower than his average while playing the Spurs.
Advantage - Raja Bell
Small Forward - Bruce Bowen vs. Grant Hill
If Bruce Bowen scores any points I’ll be surprised.  I mean, maybe just maybe he’ll get a bucket or two but I do not expect much more beyond than that.  Let’s be honest, he’s not there to score.  He’s going to lock Grant Hill up, he’s going to lock Raja Bell up, hell he might even lock up Mike D’Antoni if he gets too close to the sideline.  I hate the way this guy plays defense, but it’s not about that.  That dude is effective. Hill will be good for his averages this season, but he’s really going to have to work for it.  Bowen is not going to give him an inch. However, I think he will be able to handle it.  He’s performed above his averages against the Spurs this season but has really fallen into a slump through the month of March and April.  I just pray he’ll get into playoff mode with all those years under his belt.
Advantage - Bruce Bowen
Power Forward - Tim Duncan vs. Amare Stoudemire
Night in and night out Tim Duncan is going to go for the driest double double in all of the playoff series.  He’s good for 20 and 10 any night, except when you turn off your television set after the game, you won’t remember a thing. Amare is going to be the X factor of this series.  He has to perform well during the series in order for them to win.  His numbers are significantly lower than his season averages against the Spurs.  But, if Nash can get Shaq the ball low on the post, Amare will get the looks he needs.  I hope he paid attention during Shaq’s clutch moments and playoff mode class.  If not, the Suns are in trouble.
Advantage - Amare Stoudemire
Center - Fabricio Oberto vs. Shaquille O'Neal
Oberto is going to get worked. Bad.  I can’t wait to tune in to the press conference after the games when Shaq comes up with some moniker for this guy.  My prediction is he’ll go scoreless during the whole series. Okay maybe he’ll get a bucket in now and then, but I doubt it. Shaq’s numbers are low this season.  We all know that.  However, he is performing above his averages against the Spurs this season.  No one can guard Shaq one on one from the block.  Duncan will come double team then Shaq will dish and Amare will be there for the easy two.  If Shaq can pull this off there is hope for them yet.
Advantage - Shaquille O'Neal
Spurs' Bench vs. Suns' Bench
manu Two words. Manu Ginobli.  If you need further explanation you’ve wasted your time reading the first 1,200 words of this article, because you don’t know a thing about basketball.  Barbosa is solid.  He’ll come off the bench and his teammates can count on him to perform at his average night in and night out.  I can see him picking up some slack here and there and occasionally knocking down a big shot.  But who are we kidding; he’s no Manu Ginobli.
Advantage - Spurs Bench
Coaching - Greg Popovich vs. Mike D'Antoni
Pop has credentials.  He has four more rings than D’Antoni.  He has numerous more wins than D’Antoni. However, he also has the most boring team in the league who has not won a title back to back ever.  I don’t believe in all that astronomy mumbo jumbo, but years that end in even numbers don’t turn out to well for the Spurs. Mike D’Antoni can’t close.  I mean, if he was capable they would not have traded for Shaq.  He’s the general of a team who is known for reaching the playoffs, performing well, and not finishing.  If and when the Suns win the series it will be one big monkey off his back, him and Steve Kerr’s that is.
Advantage - Even (Because it's 2008)
