The ever so popular “genius or moron” debate will soon come to a close. The Suns have seven games to prove Steve Kerr made the most influential move of the year. It was the fear of this exact match up that prompted Kerr to acquire Shaq in the first place. Now they are set to meet in the first round of the playoffs and attempting to knock off the defending champs. This task is not going to be easy by any means. However, acquiring a seven-foot veteran, who knows just as much about winning a playoff series as his new team combined, just may be the key his team needs to beat the Spurs. I have a soft spot in my heart for the “Big Fella,” so if I was to bet with emotion I’d place my money on the Suns. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. After placing my money on USC in the first round of the tournament, on what was an obvious emotion based pick, I’ve learned my lesson. My prediction: “Flip a coin because this one is tough” in seven games.
In order for the Suns to win the series they must play great basketball on both ends of the court for seven full games. This is going to be difficult but not impossible. Shaq needs to play smart, control the boards, and stay out of foul trouble. The Suns need him to play quality minutes in order for them to advance. Also, Phoenix cannot forget the reason they win games. They push the ball and run the floor better than any other team in the league. (By the way, I’m still maintaining it doesn’t take five people to run a break. Never has, never will). In order for Shaq to play his role the rest of the team cannot forget theirs.
On the other hand, the Spurs can have a few off nights and still advance. The one thing about the Spurs that never waivers is they know their roles and play them well. I don’t expect to see too many big shots out of Bowen, but I do expect him to lock Grant Hill up. I don’t expect Parker to rip Nash at the top of the key more than twice, but I do expect him take Nash to the basket all night long. Tim Duncan will still be the most boring and fundamental forward in the league, that will never change, and Manu will prove why the NBA needs to retire the sixth man award. They have won those championships for a reason and they will show it against the Suns. I just hope Pop and the boys don’t think Assistant General Shaqtus and the troops are going to take it lying down.
| Point Guard - Tony Parker vs. Steve Nash | |||

Parker is going to light Nash up. He is going to take him off the dribble more times than any of us can count and be good for 20 points a night give or take a bucket or two. The only thing he has to worry about is that seven-foot wall he’s going to run into in the paint. I hope he has been practicing on those 15-footers. | ![]() |
Nash is known for his ability to get others involved. If he can stick to what he’s good at, the Suns should be in good shape. However, if he tries to be a hero and jack up unnecessary shots and turn the ball over the Spurs will capitalize on it. |
Advantage - Tony Parker |

Shooting Guard - Michael Finley vs. Raja Bell |
|||
![]() |
Finely is good for his average. I wouldn’t expect much more or much less, especially if Bell is guarding him. I would be surprised if he performs above and beyond what’s asked of him. | ![]() |
Raja Bell is going to be better for the Suns on defense than offense. He will knock down shots here and there when needed but I don’t see him playing any major offensive role in the series. Especially since he is performing close to two points and one assist lower than his average while playing the Spurs. |
Advantage - Raja Bell |
|||
Small Forward - Bruce Bowen vs. Grant Hill |
|||
![]() |
If Bruce Bowen scores any points I’ll be surprised. I mean, maybe just maybe he’ll get a bucket or two but I do not expect much more beyond than that. Let’s be honest, he’s not there to score. He’s going to lock Grant Hill up, he’s going to lock Raja Bell up, hell he might even lock up Mike D’Antoni if he gets too close to the sideline. I hate the way this guy plays defense, but it’s not about that. That dude is effective. | ![]() |
Hill will be good for his averages this season, but he’s really going to have to work for it. Bowen is not going to give him an inch. However, I think he will be able to handle it. He’s performed above his averages against the Spurs this season but has really fallen into a slump through the month of March and April. I just pray he’ll get into playoff mode with all those years under his belt. |
Advantage - Bruce Bowen |

Power Forward - Tim Duncan vs. Amare Stoudemire |
|||
![]() |
Night in and night out Tim Duncan is going to go for the driest double double in all of the playoff series. He’s good for 20 and 10 any night, except when you turn off your television set after the game, you won’t remember a thing. | ![]() |
Amare is going to be the X factor of this series. He has to perform well during the series in order for them to win. His numbers are significantly lower than his season averages against the Spurs. But, if Nash can get Shaq the ball low on the post, Amare will get the looks he needs. I hope he paid attention during Shaq’s clutch moments and playoff mode class. If not, the Suns are in trouble. |
Advantage - Amare Stoudemire |
|||
Center - Fabricio Oberto vs. Shaquille O'Neal |
|||
![]() |
Oberto is going to get worked. Bad. I can’t wait to tune in to the press conference after the games when Shaq comes up with some moniker for this guy. My prediction is he’ll go scoreless during the whole series. Okay maybe he’ll get a bucket in now and then, but I doubt it. | ![]() |
Shaq’s numbers are low this season. We all know that. However, he is performing above his averages against the Spurs this season. No one can guard Shaq one on one from the block. Duncan will come double team then Shaq will dish and Amare will be there for the easy two. If Shaq can pull this off there is hope for them yet. |
Advantage - Shaquille O'Neal |

Spurs' Bench vs. Suns' Bench |
|||
![]() |
Two words. Manu Ginobli. If you need further explanation you’ve wasted your time reading the first 1,200 words of this article, because you don’t know a thing about basketball. | ![]() |
Barbosa is solid. He’ll come off the bench and his teammates can count on him to perform at his average night in and night out. I can see him picking up some slack here and there and occasionally knocking down a big shot. But who are we kidding; he’s no Manu Ginobli. |
Advantage - Spurs Bench |
|||
Coaching - Greg Popovich vs. Mike D'Antoni |
|||
![]() |
Pop has credentials. He has four more rings than D’Antoni. He has numerous more wins than D’Antoni. However, he also has the most boring team in the league who has not won a title back to back ever. I don’t believe in all that astronomy mumbo jumbo, but years that end in even numbers don’t turn out to well for the Spurs. | ![]() |
Mike D’Antoni can’t close. I mean, if he was capable they would not have traded for Shaq. He’s the general of a team who is known for reaching the playoffs, performing well, and not finishing. If and when the Suns win the series it will be one big monkey off his back, him and Steve Kerr’s that is. |
Advantage - Even (Because it's 2008) |
