Just in case some of you don’t know, let me be the first to put it out there that I won this series in a domino game versus fellow talkhoops.net writer Phillip Barnett. Congratulations to me. Now with that out of the way, let’s get down to business. I’m more excited about this match up than any other in the playoffs. Washington and Cleveland going at it for the third time in three years is monumental. Both of these teams have something to prove. The Wizards do not want to get swept in a three series meeting between the two teams and the Cavs want to prove last year’s playoff run wasn’t a fluke. Agent Zero let it be known in his blog they wanted Cleveland in the first round and it is Cleveland they received. LeBron wouldn’t respond to any questions about it because I’m sure his game will speak for itself. The question is will his team’s game be able to speak up too? I think not. Gilbert said it best, “it’s hard to beat someone three times in a row.” My prediction: Wizards over Cavs in seven and LeBron will drop about 50, twice.
For the sake of his team and the credibility of his blog Gilbert Arenas better cash the fat check he wrote with those words. That guy was smart. He made it clear he would be playing the back up role while talking about how well his team is going to perform. I still think to this day DeShawn Stevenson is writing half his work, but that’s another story. I like this match up mainly because the teams are so different. There’s no LeBron on the Wizards. Matter of fact, there’s no franchise player in Washington period. So it’s the battle of mediocrity, a team full of average players versus a team with a star and a below average supporting cast. Defense is going to be the key for the Wizards. They have two options. Either shut LeBron down and let the rest of the team try and beat them or make LeBron beat them by himself. Either way you slice it, they are forced to pick their poison and losing to either is going to be embarrassing. Good thing for them, I don’t think either poison is going to be enough to kill them. If the role players can keep their averages, Gilbert can step up and play some quality minutes, and they can hold LeBron to 30 they have a chance to advance.
LeBron is going to get his 30, 7 and 7. We know that and they know that. However, 30, 7 and 7 is not going to be enough to get it done in seven games. Not against a hungry Wizards team that has something to prove. The Cavs need just one player to step up and help out LeBron to win. My vote for that player is Ilgalskas. If he can play above his average and help out on the defensive end the Cavs might have a chance to pull this one out. The guard play has to step up as well. If LeBron drives and the Wizards collapse someone needs to be able to hit the outside shot.
| Point Guard - Delonte West vs. Antonio Daniels | |||

Delonte needs to do two things. Bring the ball up the court without creating a turnover and pass the ball to LeBron. If he can successfully do those two things and occasionally knock down a shot or two while open that’s really all Mike Brown can ask for. | ![]() |
Daniels against the Cavs this season has really upped his assist game. Washington is going to need him to get the ball in the position to score for those players who have trouble creating for themselves. If he can keep his assist at his average of seven and knock down a few mid range jumpers here and there he will be playing a solid game. |
Advantage - Antonio Daniels |

Shooting Guard - Devin Brown vs. DeShawn Stevenson |

In the four games against the Wizards this season Devin Brown performed well. He was two and a half points per game above his average. My only concern is with little playoff experience, will he be able to do that in the playoffs? | ![]() |
I really hope Souija Boi in the front row won’t be too much of a distraction. He’s really going to have to concentrate on defense after all that lip he’s been giving. I just hope for the sake of his team, he’ll be able to perform on the offensive end as well. |
Advantage - Devin Brown |

Small Forward - LeBron James vs. Caron Butler |

Word is Stevenson wants LeBron in the playoffs. He wants to chase him around, commit a few fouls, and give Caron some room on the offensive end. LeBron will go off in this series so I hope DeShawn Stevenson has been working on his defense. I hope he’s been doing quick feet drills in his sleep and working on his lateral movement with the little orange cones because unfortunately for him, LeBron is about to break him down. Bad. | ![]() |
Caron Butler is one of the most athletic guys in the league, when he’s healthy. He’s averaging 20 points per game and I believe he’s good for it. If he can play solid defense and maintain his offensive game, he is going to be someone the Cavs are going to have to watch out for. |
Advantage - LeBron James |

Power Forward - Ben Wallace vs. Antawn Jamison |
|||
![]() |
Ben Wallace is always going to have a positive effect on defense. However, five points and eight boards are just not going to cut it for the Cavs to advance. He has to dig deep down inside those Detroit Championship days and pull something out. He’s averaging the lowest numbers of his career since 98. Ouch. | ![]() |
Jamison has really impressed me this season. He really put the team on his shoulders when Arenas and Butler were both out with injuries. Keeping his average is going to be tough against a very aggressive Ben Wallace. He’s going to have to take more mid-rage jump shots before trying to go body to body with Ben. |
Advantage - Antawn Jamison |

Center - Zyndrunas Ilgauskas vs. Brendan Haywood |
|||

He is my X factor. He’s good for the 14 and 9 each night. The only problem is unfortunately it will not be enough. If he can have a breakout performance during the series Washington is going to have a problem. | ![]() |
Haywood could be Washington’s secret weapon. He’s performing well above his career averages and his transition from last season to now is uncanny. If he can focus and just maintain his averages from the season he’ll be a strong asset to the team. |

Cavs' Bench vs. Wizards' Bench |
|||
![]() |
The Cavs bench has nowhere near the amount of depth the Wizards are providing. Joe Smith is very finicky and can contribute 20 points one night and four the next. Anderson Varejao cleaned up on the boards against Washington but his scoring efforts were sub par. The Cavs bench will still see quality minutes even though they are inconsistent. | ![]() |
Having Gilbert come off the bench may be the best thing for this Wizards team. The starting five have a nice chemistry and Gilbert can come off the bench, play quality minutes, and provide the extra scoring push they were missing for the past few months. The rookie Nick Young can provide some quality minutes if need be. If he gets enough run to get in the rhythm he can be dangerous. Eddie Jordan just needs to be smart about when to play him and when to pull him out. |

Coaching - Mike Brown vs. Eddie Jordan |
|||
![]() |
Mike Brown and his Cavs’ past two seasons with 50 wins and great stints in the playoffs are more than any entry level coach could ask for. Mike Brown is the reason the Wizards should be worried, not LeBron James. With only five games under their two previous seasons and playoff experience under his belt, Coach Brown just may be the push the Cavs need to edge out the Wizards. | ![]() |
Eddie Jordan is consistent. The past four seasons he’s been with the Wizards they have had virtually the same record. In order for him to advance his team to the next round he is really going to have to watch the minutes he gives his starters and reserves. If he can do a good job on giving the right people the right amount of minutes at the right time the team can end this saga with an advancement. |
Advantage - Mike Brown |
