Boy, what a season it has been. As always, there have been disappointments, upsets, surprises, and the occasional forty point game. Now, it is time to look back at what the season was.
Freshman of the year
Michael Beasley, Kansas State
20-10 Record, 10-6 Conference
26.5 points per game
12.5 rebounds per game
1.7 blocks per game
1.3 steals per game
1.2 assists per game
53.7% field goal
77% free throw
39.5% three-point
Beasley has been amazing this year, leading Kansas State to a 19-10 record that included wins over then top ten teams Texas A&M (#9) and previously undefeated Kansas (#2) as well as a shot at making the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1996. He has already broken the freshman double double record with twenty six in a single season. Although the Wildcats are 2-5 in their last seven games, Beasley has continued to impress with 32 PPG and 12 RPG in that stretch.
Player of the year
Tyler Hansbrough, North Carolina
29-2 Record, 14-2 Conference
#1 Ranked Team
23.1 points per game
10.5 rebounds per game
0.3 blocks per game
1.5 steals per game
0.9 assists per game
54.3% field goal
81.3% free throw
Some would argue that Michael Beasley is also worthy of being player of the year. Beasley, after all, has the better stats. However, Tyler Hansbrough stepped up when his team needed him most. When Ty Lawson went down with his injury against Florida State on February 3, Tyler Hansbrough kept his team in contention for a #1 seed by going 5-1 while Ty Lawson was out, losing only to then #2 ranked Duke. Now of course, the Tar Heels will have a chance to avenge their loss on Saturday night when they play at Duke.
Coach of the year
Keno Davis, Drake
27-4 Record, 15-3 Conference
#20 Ranked Team
Pre-season picked 9th in Conference
In his first season as head coach of mens basketball at Drake, Keno Davis got the job done. After his father took the team to their first winning season in twenty years, Davis did even more. He took the Bulldogs to the top of their conference. The Bulldogs are ranked #21 in the nation with a 26-4 mark. They are considered a lock in many minds to make the NCAA tournament for the first time in thirty years when the committee meets next week.
Biggest Disappointment
North Carolina State Wolf pack, ACC
15-15 Record, 4-12 Conference
91st RPI
21st Strength of Schedule
The North Carolina State Wolf pack are the sad story of college basketball this season. After a miraculous run for the ACC tournament championship last season, the team was picked to finish third in the ACC in the preseason picks and was ranked in the Top 25 to start the season. After starting out 11-3, the Wolf pack have fallen apart. They are 4-11 in ACC play and have lost seven straight. The Wolf pack will have even more trouble when they close out the season at Wake Forest.
Biggest Surprise
Connecticut Huskies, Big East
23-7 Record, 12-5 Conference
#13 Ranked Team
15th RPI
17th Strength of Schedule
The Connecticut Huskies are easily the biggest surprise this season. After finishing at 17-14 overall and 6-10 in conference last season, the huskies were picked to finish ninth in Big East play. No one knew what to think of this team. They have shown what they are made of and have once again become a national contender. They began to show it when they lost their PG Jerome Dyson to suspension. When he was out, they hit a ten game winning streak that included wins over Indiana, Louisville, and Pittsburgh.
