What Went Right?
When Ruben Patterson is your most stable player and playing the most games for your team, not a whole lot can go right for your season. Maurice Williams had his best season as a professional by averaging 17 points per game and 6 assists. Andrew Bogut had a breakthrough year when he could stay on the court with 12.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest. When Michael Redd did play, he averaged of 26 points per game as he attempted to be the leader of this squad. After a mid-season trade for Steve Blake, Earl Boykins was able to provide a spark off the bench by pouring in 14 points per game. However, even with all of this good, the injuries took their collective toll and contributed greatly to the Bucks finishing 26 games under .500.
What Went Wrong?
Just about everything that could in terms of health. Bobby Simmons missed the whole season with a heel injury. Charlie Villanueva missed 43 games with an elbow injury. Bogut missed 16 games with a leg sprain. Michael Redd missed 29 games with a knee injury. Mo Williams missed 14 games with shoulder sprain. Dan Gadzuric also had a shoulder injury and missed 28 games throughout the year. That's a grand total of 212 games missed because of injury to 6 key players for the Milwaukee organization. Add in Terry Stotts borderline retardation when it comes to coaching and that's why this team only won 28 games.
Off-Season Overview
This was a pretty tumultuous off-season for the Bucks organization. It started off with the drafting of Yi Jianlin. It was a good selection except for the fact that the Chinese Govertment did not want to have Yi play in Milwaukee. It took a couple of months of negotiations and pleadings from GM Larry Harris and owner Senator Herb Kohl to get Yi's people to allow him to come to Wisconsin to play basketball. After that, Charlie Bell tried to escape after a summer full of low-ball offers, only to have the Bucks match the offer sheet with the Heat.
Players Added- Guard Charlie Bell (Re-signed), Point Guard Maurice Williams (Re-signed), Forward Yi Jianlin (Draft), Point Guard Ramon Sessions (Draft), Center Jake Voskuhl (Free Agent, Charlotte), Guard/Forward Desmond Mason (Free Agent, New Orleans), Guard Awvee Storey (Free Agent, Europe), Point Guard Royal Ivey (Free Agent, Atlanta), Center Michael Ruffin (Free Agent, Washington)
Players Lost- Small Forward Ruben Patterson (Free Agent, Clippers), Guard Lynn Greer (Waived), Forward Damir Markota (Waived)
Phil Barnett's Impact Players-
This team is just trying to put everything back together after finishing last season 28-54. The Bucks were plagued with injuries last season and those who did play forgot what defense was allowing an average of 104. 03 ppg. Teams also shot 49% from the field. This team should be improved if they stay healthy, but you can say that for just about every team in the league.
Breakout Player: Charlie Villanueva should have a breakout season this year. He is coming into this season healthy after only playing 39 games this year. Everyone knows what he can do offensively, this year he should get the minutes to produce while the franchise develops Yi Jianlian.
Disappointing Player: Mo Williams is a point guard with a shooting guards mentality. He’s a poor man’s Allen Iverson, and that doesn’t bode well in a triangle offense, especially when you have Michael Redd on the court too. When Williams learns how to pass he will be an above average point guard.
FantasyInsideronline.com Fantasy Sleeper
Andrew Bogut, Center- I was in Milwaukee in early October and had a chance to scout the Bucks. I was mainly looking for how Bobby Simmons was recovering from injury, how Charlie Villanueva meshed with the team, and how Yi Jianlin was adjusting to the NBA. The one thing that stood out to me, however, was how amazing Andrew Bogut looked. He’s chiseled and looks to be more active and athletic this year. He was the quickest player on the floor not named Maurice Williams and seemed intent to dunk on everybody.
Bogut had 12.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game last year, to go along with 3 assists and 55% shooting. His free throw percentage is sub-60%, so that might hurt your fantasy team a little, but I would look for him to have a monster year and average at least a double-double along with 4 assists. Think Brad Miller without the female attributes.
Best-Case Scenario
They finally stay healthy! Michael Redd is able to continue growing as a complete player and a scorer. Mo Williams proves to not be a bust after signing his big contract in the off-season. Charlie Villlanueva fully recovers from his arm injuries and has a breakout year that his fans had hoped for last year. Andrew Bogut becomes an established post player and Yi Jianlin looks more like Dirk Nowitzki as a 3rd year player as opposed to Dirk Nowtizki as a rookie. Bobby Simmons shows why the Bucks gave him the big contract years ago. The Bucks win about 45 games and slip into the 6th or 7th seed in the East.
Worst Case Scenario
A repeat of last year happens. The Bucks get ravaged by injuries as they stumble out of the gate, falling out of the playoff hunt by late February. The city turns on the big contract given to Bell and Mo Williams. Yi Jianlin turns out to be a complete bust his first year but due to the fact that the Bucks promised the Chinese Government that he would play 20 minutes per game, his poor play is maginified even more as it becomes a huge detriment to the team. They win no more than 28 games and are deep in the lottery once again.
Talkhoops.net Prediction- 4th in Division, 12th in the East
The Bucks are moving in the right direction. When I scouted the team, aside from Charlie Bell and Awvee Storey, the whole team seemed like good guys that wanted to be there. But they just aren't there yet. They'll need this year to play together and learn Coach K's system because they weren't healthy and didn't get it in only 18 games last year. Michael Redd will have a great year again and Andrew Bogut will probably make the All-Star team. Yi Jianlin will finally start to figure it out sometime in March. I expect this team to play really well in the last month of the season and look promising for the following year. Expect 32 to 35 wins from this squad.
Last Season: Injuries Prey on Bucks
The Bucks were moving in the right direction after 2005-2006. They went 40-42 and made the playoffs despite having Terry Stotts as their head coach. Michael Redd was the future of basketball in Milwaukee. Bobby Simmons was a great free agent signing and Andrew Bogut had the potential to be a big contributor for this team someday. Coming into last season, they had high aspirations for a winning record and a much higher seed in the playoffs. Then they started playing the season. And everybody got hurt.
Michael Redd missed significant time. So did Mo Williams and Andrew Bogut. Charlie Villanueva couldn't stay on the court due to injuries. Brian Skinner, Dan Gadzuric and Ersan Ilyasova all missed games. The team was a complete mess. Stotts was fired after 64 games and former player, Larry Krystkowiak, took over the rest of the season. The Bucks finished with 28 wins and missed the playoffs by 12 games.
