Kobe or Not:
Here They Come

"I would certainly listen. At any time, I think you have to do that with anybody. It's just part of the game, to listen to somebody who has a dissatisfied player that you think is going to fit. You can't keep too many loyalties. You've got to look at it as a business. He looks at it the same way I look at it."- Jerry Buss
Phil Barnett explains what this means for the Lakers.

Scouting the Pre-Season

Over the past week, I’ve been able to scout 5 NBA teams relatively closely.  From watching practice and a scrimmage in Milwaukee, to watching the Suns against the Kings in Sacramento, and viewing some tapes of the Celtics and Timberwolves from overseas, I’ve been able to get a pretty good handle on what these 5 teams have to offer this up and coming season.
Zach Harper offers his observations.

Want to Write for Talkhoops.net?

We're always looking for talented and ambitious writers to contribute to Talkhoops.net. Here are the parameters for writing for our site:

1. We're looking for sharp knowledge about the NBA. There shouldn't be articles like the Lakers should get LeBron and Dwyane Wade to go with Kobe.

2. You need to be somewhat entertaining. Have fun with what you're writing and make it relevant to today's world.

3. Proofread what you submit. Spellcheck it and check the grammar. I want it as tight as possible.

4. This at the moment is not a paying job. In the future, it most likely could be, that's going to be quite a while. This is an opportunity to have your voice heard by thousands of readers and to express your feelings on basketball today.

5. When you submit something to me, it only goes to me. Once something is submitted to Talkhoops.net, you cannot have it posted on another website without our consent. We essentially own it.

If these sound like reasonable requests and you love to write about basketball, submit some writing to writeforus@talkhoops.net or zharper@talkhoops.net. Thanks for your continued support.

Most Underrated/Overrated Players

These guys are at the top of our lists, but which is guy is on which list? Photo Courtesy of detroitbadboys.com

The most entertaining arguments and often the most heated arguments are fans defending their guys and berating the guys of other teams. It's proclaiming who shouldn't be regarded as NBA royalty and who's getting screwed for not being crowned. Well, Zach Harper has taken care of the argument for everybody and expounded who is the most overrated and underrated players in the National Basketball Association.

How the Mighty Have Fallen

This used to be a great duo, whether they knew it or not. Photo Courtesy of msnbc.com

The “City of Brotherly Love” is not a nickname that is well-deserved, considering Philadelphia’s hate/hate relationship with its sports franchises.  The fans are well chronicled for booing their teams mercilessly for even the smallest of infractions.  Most would even say that the Philadelphia fans give their own teams a harder time than any visiting team.  They hold their athletes and teams to a high standard and only expect the best out of them.
Brandon Gallawa thinks it will be a rough season in Rocky's hometown.

2007-2008 Impact Rookies

How will the #2 and #9 picks fair in their rookie seasons?

It’s time again to welcome a new collection of young men into the professional ranks and this batch appears to be special.  Last year’s class accounted for little regular season impact but that looks to change in 2007-08.  Despite losing number one overall pick Greg Oden to micro-fracture knee surgery, the latest collection of rookies should represent well.

Projecting players who will make an immediate impact is more difficult than simply recounting where the players were drafted.  Some early picks will be brought along slowly while some later picks might be thrown into the fire immediately.
Cory Elfrink has who will step in right away to help their teams.

Top 10 Fantasy Sleepers

These two big men are looking for a big stats year.

Correctly identifying fantasy basketball sleepers early on is what makes the difference between a top three team and one that lands in the middle of the pack.  Typically, managers will base their player rankings based on last season’s productions.  Often, sleepers are those players that had down years but are poised for a strong rebound.  Other times, they are players who are on new teams or have taken on new roles with their old team.  Other sleepers are those returning from injuries and need to be carefully watched during the preseason.
Cory Elfrink has the players that will break out this season.

Top 10 Veteran Career Years

Corey Maggette and Ricky Davis are just two of the players looking forward to contract years.

Some of these players are in their contract years, when athletes are known to turn up their effort in order to negotiate for as many dollars as possible after the season.  A few of these players find themselves on new teams and project to get more touches and minutes than usual.  Others are in the same old place, but their new surroundings will demand more from them.
Cory Elfrink predicts which players will have the best years to cash in.

Top 10 Fantasy Busts

Are two of the league's best, two of fantasy's most overrated?

What defines a bust?  A bust is essentially a player that you have high expectations for, a player that has produced well in the past, but then fails to live up to their draft positions.  The best way to identify a bust is to look closely at his team’s off-season moves and how they might affect the playing time of the player.  A new coach’s style or added/subtracted depth at a position can often predict how a player’s production might change.
Cory Elfrink has this year's top fantasy busts.

Top 10 Position Battles

Eddie Jones and Stack are teammates now, but they're battling it out for the title of Mavs' 6th man.

There are a lot of questions to be answered during NBA Training Camps as seen above. But what teams have the best position battles going on this pre-season? There are guys fighting for their jobs and roles with the teams as they work towards team success, personal success, and the next contract. Cory Elfrink has the breakdown of the best position battles of the pre-season.

Every year the NBA plays witness to a select group of individuals whose inspired play earns them their teammates’ confidence and more prominent playing time from coach.  Last year we saw the arrival of Kevin Martin, Monta Ellis, Carlos Boozer, Deron Williams, Luol Deng and Tyson Chandler among others.  Who will it be this year?  Here are Cory Elfrink's best bets.
